Session 7
Closing The Muddy Hole

Closing The Muddy Hole

The heroes very quietly opened the door to the next room to find 2 Giant Frogs in a shallow pit of mud. A group of Croakers and a Bullywug Mud Lord were lying in wait, but were dispatched while the group attempted to deal with Severian and Crystal being swallowed by the frogs, and most of the group in danger of falling to the Croakers’ claw attacks.

Opening the heavy vault door, the heroes found themselves face-to-face with a malfuctoning magical staff that appeared to be allowing the Elemental Chaos plane to intrude on the Material Plane. The sending stones held out just long enough for a quick description to be given to Bob and Taika, and their response that it would take a combination of knowledge of nature and the arcane to repair the staff. Severian was selected to retrieve the staff, and he was met by 4 Mud Men as soon as he stepped into the swirling mud surrounding the staff. Corun took the staff to begin attempting to repair it while the rest held off the elemental creatures. After they were reduced to puddles, the group seemed to relax a little too much, nearly reopening the portal in their fumbling attempts to repair it. With a bit more concentration, and assistance from Heimdal, Alonyous, and Severian, the pairing of Corun’s arcane power and Crystal’s knowledge of the natural world was enough to restore the Staff Of Earthen Might to its original state.

Defeated (Chamber Of The Frog):
  • 1 Bullywug Mud Lord
  • 2 Giant Frogs
  • 4 Bullywug Croakers
Treasure (Chamber Of The Frog): Defeated (Vault Of The Staff):

XP (each): 370

Session 8
"Irontooth Must Be Warned!"

“Irontooth Must Be Warned!”

The newly-named “Hashtags” reunited at Wrafton’s Inn to discuss the past day’s events and decide their next move. The necklace with the Orcus symbol carved into it was still a mystery, so the group questioned Salvana and Valthrun at the Inn. Ninaran seemed to take an interest in the discussion, and said that she spotted cult members in a nearby cave behind a waterfall. It contains only a handful of kobolds, and shouldn’t be any problem for the adventurers. Also questioned:

Lord Padraig – “Preposterous!” The quest should take priority.

Sister Linora – “I would have heard about it. And I would have taken action in the name of Avandra”

The mirror was found not to be magical, although a valuable antique. Valthrun was prepared to pay 400gp for it, but the group was able to sell it in the marketplace for 550gp. The necklace got an offer of 80gp, which the group refused. Also nearby in the marketplace, The Hashtags were approached by Delphina Moongem, who let them know that she spotted goblins around the old keep in the North.

On the orders from Padraig and advice from Ninarn, The Hashtags set out for the waterfall where they encounter over a dozen kobolds of varing strengths and abilities. Some of these abilities were augmented by a sacred circle marked by runes on the ground, but the element of surprise enabled The Hashtags to emerge victorious.

The last kobold managed to escape back behind the waterfall, shouting in draconic “Irontooth must be warned!”

  • 1 Kobold Skirmisher
  • 10 Kobold Minions
  • 1 Kobold Dragonshield
  • 1 Kobold Slinger
  • 4gp, 17sp

XP (total): 475

XP (each): 79

Session 9
Letters From Home

Letters From Home

In this session the group followed a slinger into the waterfall. Alonyous tried his best to stealthily peak inside the waterfall, but the enemies inside became aware of us very quickly. After slaying many minions, and battling with skirmishers, a wyrmpriest and dragonshields, Irontooth (presumably) appeared. The goblin thought to be Irontooth had a facial tattoo of a skeletal ram’s head, similar to the pendant we had found earlier of Orcus (god of the undead). His jaw was also made of metal, thus suggesting him to be Irontooth.

The group was down to four members for the session, and with numerous baddies to fight there were many times we fell unconscious. Corun came to our rescue each time. Matt made the smart decision to cash in a fancy card that gave Heimdall regeneration 5 for the encounter. We calculated that Heimdall took over 100 points of damage during the session! Also, let it be on record that Jon rolled 3 consecutive crit rolls in this session! A 1/8000 chance! (This was followed immediately by Kris rolling a crit. Odds?)

Crystal made the finishing blow, and the rest of Irontooth’s followers ran off after his death. With his last breath Irontooth said “Kalarel and Lord Orcus prepare my way.” In his…pockets…there was a small silver key and a note to Irontooth from Kalarel. The note read:

“My spy in Winterhaven suggests we keep an eye out for visitors to the area. It probably does not matter; in just a few more days, I’ll completely open the rift. Then Winterhaven’s people will serve as food for all those Lord Orcus send to do my bidding.”

As a souvenir, Alonyous (with Heimdall’s help) ripped the metal jaw from Irontooth’s face.

The key fit into a locked treasure chest inside the cave. Unfortunately Alonyous forced the chest open without using the key, but luckily nothing bad happened. The +1 dwarven chainmail that was inside went straight to our dwarven cleric. Jon used a fancy card to double the gold we found from 420 to 840! Our DM mentioned that it looked as though some treasure had been moved out.

Feel free to add if I forgot anything!

Session 10
Rumor Has It..

Rumor Has It…

We found a note in the cave near the treasure (written in common on a torn piece of tan cloth):

They are coming! Prepare!

We also found a note on Irontooth written in Goblin:

Greetings Mighty Irontooth,
We have received your human slaves. Good work brother. Skilled warlord Krand is proud of your work.
-Sword brother Tra’ak

First the group was met at the gate (very publicly) by Lord Padraig:
Lord Padraig- first thing he asked was “did you find them, are they safe?” Apparently townspeople have been disappearing. The group requested a more private audience with Lord Padraig (due to the sensitive nature of the information we wanted to discuss), and were granted private audience at Lord Padraig’s manor. We discussed the events at the waterfall, and gave Irontooth’s iron jaw to Lord Padraig.
Valthrun- showed us scrolls and books about the Keep on the Shadowfell. The keep was built by the old empire Nerath (now Winterhaven). A rift was opened in the keep by Karavakos (a powerful wizard), allowing access to undead. It was called “the unholy sanctuary of Orcus.” Valthrun showed us a poem about “the Kinslayer.” Rumor has it that 80 years ago the Garrision, Sir Gerald Keegan, slaughtered everyone in the keep, including his own family. The rumor continues that his ghost now haunts the keep.
Lord Padraig- upon hearing Valthrun’s story he doubled our reward and sent us on our way.

A successful religion check told us that the cult of Orcus has mostly human followers in secret societies. They wear black hooded robes with the Orcus symbol on them and they make human sacrifices. Orcus is also known as Bloodlord and Demonlord of Undead.

Went to market:
Delphina- she thinks saying the word “keep” is bad luck. We agree to use the word “Inn” from now on instead. She has only seen goblins to the north. No humans and no one in unusual robes.
Bairwin Wildarson- Valthrun is his most “eclectic” buyer. Still interested in buying the amulet.

Went to the Inn:
Salvana- Did not seem interested in speaking with us, but did provide food and drink “on the house” (a decision she seemed to regret later in the evening)
Ninaran- Came to our table. She has heard rumors that we are going to the Keep and that’s bad luck.
Eilian- Looked distraught/worried. The group observed he seemed to be obsessing over a torn paper, but it was unclear to Alonious from a distance (while making covert observations on his way to the head) what it was. Corun “drunkenly” sat down with him and asked him what was up/what he was reading, giving her companions the opportunity to come over and “retrieve her” and discuss further with Eilian. He gave us the torn sheet from a book. The paper had the history of the battle between Nerath and Shadowfell. He said things have changed and he had a nightmare about darkness behind a door.

Went to Valthrun’s Tower:
Valthrun- Told us that the townspeople don’t all think we have the town’s best interests in mind. Some think we are actually looking to start a cult. Valthrun told us the rift would have to have been opened deliberately, and by a very powerful wizard. He showed us the book he thought the torn page came from (a Nentirvale history book). The most powerful wizard he knew of was the wizards of old (Karavakos), now dead. We asked him about the Rod of Ruin, Kalerel, Irontooth, Krand and Tra’ak. He had only heard legends of the rod and nothing of the others. He did tell us that Orcus cults tend to worship at midnight.

Split up to be in different places at midnight:
Crystal- went outside the town walls towards the Keep. Transformed into wolf. Thought she saw something out of the corner of her eye after midnight on her side of the road in the trees.
Heimdall- Talked to the 2 guards at the gate. Every few years the town comes under attack and the townspeople hide in the Siege Supplies room to the left of Lord Padraig’s Manor. Lord Padraig and Sister Linora hold the only keys. Nobody was seen entering or leaving the town through the main gate all night (which has been noted as very unusual).
Corun- Stayed at Inn. She was the only person there all night other than Salvana (who regretted her “on the house” offer from earlier that evening).
Alonius- Sneaked around town. Thought he saw something out of the corner of his eye after midnight, near the Tenements (the group later examined the area around the Tenements for secret passages or new construction but found nothing of note)

Next morning:
Rond Kelfem (Captain of the Regulars/guards)- brought us to his office in the barracks. Has only heard of Irontooth in passing. Doesn’t know the other names. Says all his guards were born and raised in Winterhaven. He gave us a tour of the Siege Supplies (from the outside). We got his permission to patrol the tops of the town walls at night.
Guard- gave us tour from the top of the town wall. There are many staircases leading to the top of the walls. There is only one entrance to the Seige Supplies and no windows. Lord Padraig’s Manor is right up against the outside north wall. The guard seemed to have more respect for Sister Linora than Lord Padraig.

Go to speak with Sister Linora!

Session 11
Flaming Rats and Fleeing Goblin
h1. Flaming Rats and Fleeing Goblin

Alternate title: “Flaming rats and leaping goblins”

After the Hashtags’ restful recovery, they sought out more news from their sources in Winterhaven. The party went separate ways to their designated locals, while Alonyous searched for any clues. Elian did not avoid them, but instead passed them along to Valthrun for any advancing news. Sister Lenora could not offer any advice on the cult followers, as neither could her new ward Bob. Heimdall spoke with Rond of the Guards, and found out only Kobolds and goblins were the creatures that had been encountered by the Winterhaven Regulars. A tour of the Siege Supply would be given, but only if Padraig or Lenora would give loan of their key to the party. Lenora gives the key for the purpose of the Supply tour, and Corun, Crystal, and Alonyous decide to trace the key. No hidden passages were found, but a patch did have a scent of Kobold. Once all inspection was concluded, the party wondered on the where abouts of Ninaran, but nobody knew where she was. Not even Lenora.

Upon leaving Winterhaven, the Hashtags took their way to the Keep, which was a swift journey without confrontation. As they arrived, they notice a stone staircase going down, but no trace of light. At this point Severian showed his face. After being included of the recent events, he decides to use his Shadow Cloak to stealthily move the party into the lower level of the keep. Corun and Alonyous notice squeaks and the pungent stench of unwashed bodies. Also a goblin warrior who has not noticed them is on patrol.

While that goblin warrior gets beaten within an inch of its life, more goblins show up, as well as a pit with a swarm of rats that Heimdall falls into. One of the goblin sharpshooters goes down courtesy of Severian, and Corun enflames the swarm of rats. As one of the goblins tries to flee, to the direction of which the party thinks is a prison section, he is also killed off. Crystal ( and majority of the party ) then attempts to intimidate the first goblin that was sighted, but with the assassin power skills of Severian, the goblin mentions Balgron and the Reavers. The goblin is then bound and gagged and tossed into the same pit trap that Heimdall fell into, as Corun and Alonyous stand guard.

“The whispering in my head, will it ever end ?”
“The little girl, who was she ? Her blood tasted like copper, but oh so sweet !”
“Traitors, they are all traitors to the Blood Lord !!”

“Splug” is also mentioned by one of the goblins
